How To Choose A Contractor To Build Your Deck

Building a deck is a big decision, but a very rewarding one. On top of adding value to your home, it will definitely be where you will relax during the sunny days! A deck isn’t just a new feature to your house, but it kind of becomes an extra “room”.

However, many are unsure about how to choose a contractor. Not only will it be a stranger coming to your place for a few days, but more importantly, not all contractors offer the same quality outcome and the same value proposition.

Kaltimber in knowledge-sharing action

We give you our top tips for choosing the right company to create that new area where you will relax and eat with friends and family.

Ask around

Obviously, the first thing to do is to ask your relatives who they hired for a similar job. There isn't a better trust builder than contracting someone who did an excellent job for someone you know. You might even have a better idea about the pricing if they share their quote with you.

Aside from your inner circle, don’t be shy to knock at strangers’ doors if you notice that they have a beautiful decking!

Know your project

There are so many materials around that you will need to have good knowledge about what is available before making a firm choice. Do not hesitate to get a book about decking! This process will allow you to discuss on a similar wave-length with any contractor. He will know that you did your research, and if his suggestions align with what you have seen around, you will know that he understands your needs.

Knowledge is key to success!

Ask the contractor as many questions as you can

Knowing your stuff will help you in asking questions to your potential contractors and evaluate if you both are on the same line.

  • Do you have experience working with composite decking? Wood?

  • What’s the expected duration of the building?

  • What’s their building process?

  • Do they have a portfolio?

  • Can you contact some of their previous clients?

  • Will there be any risk to the potential buried pipes?

  • How long will they work daily?

  • What is the payment process?

  • How they deal with potential issues such as your dissatisfaction between your request and their deliverable.

Ask for samples

The best contractors will have a few sets of decking samples to show you. That way, you will have a great idea of the deck’s final look is, feel the samples and start dreaming about enjoying it under your bare feet!

Track all changes in writing

On every construction site, there is a possibility to have a few changes from the original contract along the way. It could be unforeseen setbacks -such as weather-, access issues, or a change/additional material. That is fairly normal, but they shall be documented to protect both you and the contractor. Pay particular attention to all additional costs!
